Summer Reading Challenge Time

The sun is starting to shine, and the weather is getting nicer... which means summertime is just around the corner and the school year is almost done. But don't let the learning stop there - try signing up for a Summer Reading Challenge this year!

A Summer Reading Challenge is a program, often organized by libraries, bookstores or schools, encouraging children and young adults to read during the summer. Challenges often motivate readers to try new genres, authors or formats to broaden their reading experience. Using a physical logbook, an online platform or an app, participants can track and earn rewards for reading and reaching certain milestones.

There are plenty of fun and easy ways to join a Summer Reading Challenge. Barnes & Noble rewards kids with a free book for reading a set number and completing a short journal (via Barnes & Noble). Scholastic’s Home Base app lets kids read, join virtual events and play book-themed games. Many local libraries, like Detroit Public Library branches, also offer great programs and prizes to keep kids reading all summer.

Summer reading challenges aim to prevent the "summer slide" in reading skills and provide meaningful ways to set goals and earn rewards to make reading more enjoyable. The "summer slide" refers to students experiencing learning loss over summer break, when they’re not engaged in formal education. Without regular practice and reinforcement, reading, math and other skills can decline, especially for children in elementary school. The "slide" can vary in severity, but often results in students needing to spend time reviewing previous material when school resumes, rather than immediately progressing to new concepts.

That is why programs like Summer Reading Challenges are so valuable because they keep young minds active, engaged and excited about learning, even outside the classroom. So, as the school year winds down and the summer excitement builds, consider signing up for a reading challenge that helps form and foster a love of reading.
